AVG CTF File Error
Published on November 13, 2008 by Billy Williams
I recently received an email from a client with the following content:
When I open AVG, my up date manager says “Invalid update control CTF file” and anti virus and spyware says “data base outdated”. I emailed support at AVG and message below is what I got back. I checked FAQ but could find nothing about CTF file. I need detailed instructions on how to fix this.
So I did some research, found the problem is associated with the IE Link Scanner and located this reply from the AVG Forum:
You need to rename/remove the CTF temp files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download…. Dont delete all the .bin files in there unless you want to re-run all updates since your original installation (reinstallation seems to cause a problem in IEs Link Scanner which causes IE to Crash). Only rename/remove the avginfo files that end with .ctf….
Unless you really know what you’re doing, deleting or renaming files on your computer is a good way to crash Windows, resulting in expensive repairs. This is a fairly easy fix for us in the shop, at your location or via Remote, so we can quickly resolve this problem for you.
